# Troubleshooting

> Fixes for common Envy problems: saving and autosave errors, blocked exports, fallback fonts, Godot not reloading, layers that will not move, and getting support.

## The save chip says Autosave off or Save failed

**Autosave off** means Envy's storage on this computer didn't accept a test write when Envy started. Nothing is lost yet, but edits won't be kept as a draft.

- Press **Ctrl S** to save the project as a file, and press it again after further edits. While drafts can't be stored, Envy writes the linked file only when you press Ctrl S.
- Once the problem is fixed (a full disk, for example), open the save chip's menu and choose **Check again**.

**Save failed** means a draft write failed after you edited. A bar over the canvas says that changes are not being saved. Envy tries again every five seconds; **Retry** tries now and **Save** writes a file. Until one of them works, your edits are only in the open window.

**Write failed** is about the linked file: Envy couldn't write it, and the chip's tooltip says why. Press **Ctrl S** to try again, or **Save as…** (Ctrl Shift S) to pick another place. See [Projects and saving](/docs/projects#the-save-chip).

## The window doesn't close

Envy waits for the draft and the linked file to be written before it closes. When a write fails, the window stays open and says why. Save a file first, or close the window again within 15 seconds to quit and lose the unsaved edits.

## The linked file changed outside Envy

If you have edits of your own, Envy doesn't write over the file. Open the save chip's menu and choose **Reload from file** to take the file's content, or **Keep mine** to write your version over it. Your version stays in version history either way. See [When the file changes outside Envy](/docs/projects#when-the-file-changes-outside-envy).

## An export says document errors block it

Document errors stop the AI handoff, Godot, Unity and web exports, so a broken UI doesn't reach a game. Warnings don't. Choose **Open document checks** in the export dialog, or the checks button above the canvas, and click an issue to go to the layer. The **Document** export is never blocked.

## The AI package didn't download

When a screenshot fails to render, nothing downloads, so you never get a package with missing pictures. The export dialog marks the screenshots that failed. Choose **Export without screenshots**, or fix the screen and export again.

## Screenshots or PNGs show the wrong font

A family that isn't embedded loads from Google Fonts. When that fails (no network), the picture uses a fallback font and the message names the family. Embed the font in **Assets › Fonts** and export again. Embedded fonts also reach Godot, Unity and the web with no setup. See [Fonts](/docs/style#fonts).

## Text shows {player.hp} instead of a value

A template whose data path has no value is left as written, on purpose, so you notice. Give the path a value in the sample data (**Data & events › Sample JSON**), or set it from the game with `set_data` / `setData`. Document checks list data paths with no sample value.

## Godot doesn't pick up my changes

- Hot reload works while the game runs from the Godot editor, not in exported games.
- It watches `.envy.json` files. A `.envy` project isn't watched.
- The file Envy writes must be the one `EnvyUI` loads, for example `res://ui/my_ui.envy.json`, and `hot_reload` must be on (the default).

See [Live reload](/docs/godot#live-reload).

## A layer won't go into a frame

- Hold **Ctrl** while you drag, and let go of the pointer before you let go of Ctrl.
- A locked frame doesn't take layers, and a layer inside a component instance stays where it is: dropped on an instance, a layer goes into the frame around it.
- A component can't go inside itself: that frame is outlined in red and named "A component cannot contain itself".
- While the timeline records, a drag keys the position instead.

See [Moving between frames](/docs/editor#moving-between-frames).

## A shortcut does nothing

Shortcuts wait while you type in a field and while a menu, popover or dialog is open. Close it or click the canvas, then try again. Shortcuts that change layers work only on a page that shows the canvas. The full list is in [Keyboard shortcuts](/docs/shortcuts).

## The eyedropper is missing

The color picker's eyedropper uses the system web view. The Windows app has it. The Linux build's web view doesn't, so the button is hidden there.

## Translated text clips

Open **Localization › Text overflow**: it lists text that no longer fits its layer, measured from the real layout. Turn on the pseudo-locale to find clipping before translations arrive. See [Localization](/docs/localization#in-the-editor).

## Getting help

- **Help** (the **?** at the bottom of the rail) › **Contact support** copies the support address, info@mythicbrain.com.
- **Help › About Envy** shows your version. **Copy details** copies the version and system details for your message. They hold nothing from your document.
- If Envy shows **Something went wrong**, choose **Save a copy…** to keep the open document, then **Copy diagnostics** and send them with your message.
